The Soba Valley (Valle de Soba) is a quiet mountain valley in the far east of Cantabria, northern Spain, with limestone peaks, clear rivers and stone villages. It is a little over an hour from Bilbao and about an hour and a half from Santander.

The source of the Asón

At the head of the valley, inside the Collados del Asón Natural Park, the river Asón is born as a waterfall of around 70 metres — the highest in Cantabria. A waymarked path climbs to a viewpoint below the falls. It is at its best after rain, in autumn, winter and spring.

The Soba zip line

Next to the Gándara waterfall, the Tirolina de Soba is a twin zip line of over 400 metres on which two people fly side by side above the gorge. Booking ahead is essential.

Walks and mountain passes

For an easy walk, follow the river Gándara to its source. For views, drive up the Portillo de la Sía pass, which links Soba with the province of Burgos and has spectacular viewpoints at the top — it is also a favourite with road cyclists.

Caves

The Cullalvera cave in Ramales de la Victoria, the Pozalagua cave in neighbouring Karrantza, famous for its eccentric stalactites, and the Ojo Guareña cave system in Burgos are all within easy reach — perfect for a rainy day.

Food

Local cooking means cocido montañés, a hearty bean stew, and artisan cheeses. For dessert, try sobaos and quesadas from the nearby Pas valleys.
