Hiking in the Soba Valley and the Collados del Asón
By Casa Calma, from the Soba Valley · Updated

The Soba Valley is one of the best and least crowded hiking areas in eastern Cantabria, with routes for every level: easy riverside walks, waterfalls, and high limestone ridges in the Collados del Asón Natural Park.
Easy: the river Gándara
A gentle, mostly flat walk along the river to its source, suitable for families. It passes meadows, woods and traditional farm buildings.
Moderate: the source of the Asón
A short walk to a viewpoint facing Cantabria’s highest waterfall. Best after rain, from autumn to spring.
Challenging: the Collados del Asón
Long mountain routes through karst landscapes, with big views over the valleys. These are for experienced hikers: check the forecast, carry a map or GPS track and start early.
Practical tips
- Best seasons: spring and autumn. Summer is mild but start early.
- The weather changes fast in the mountains: always carry a waterproof.
- Paths can be muddy all year: wear walking boots.
- Respect livestock and close gates behind you.
