The Asón waterfall: Cantabria’s highest
By Casa Calma, from the Soba Valley · Updated

The source of the river Asón (Nacimiento del Asón) is Cantabria’s highest waterfall: the river emerges from the rock and drops around 70 metres down a cliff face, in the Collados del Asón Natural Park on the edge of the Soba Valley.
The walk
A waymarked path leads from the road to a viewpoint facing the falls, through meadows and woodland. It is short and of easy-to-moderate difficulty, suitable for most walkers and older children. Wear proper shoes: the path can be muddy.
When to go
The waterfall depends on rain. From autumn to spring it is spectacular; in late summer it can shrink to a thin ribbon. The days after heavy rain are the best of all.
The Collados del Asón Natural Park
The park protects a karst landscape of peaks, gorges and caves at the head of the Asón valley. Longer mountain routes start from the same area for experienced hikers.
