Eastern Cantabria sits on limestone riddled with caves. Three of the best are within easy reach of the Soba Valley — and they are the perfect plan for a rainy day, as they stay at a steady temperature all year.

Cullalvera (Ramales de la Victoria)

A huge cave mouth on the edge of Ramales de la Victoria, with a walkway leading deep inside. It also contains prehistoric cave art.

Pozalagua (Karrantza)

Just across the border in Bizkaia, Pozalagua was discovered in the 1950s by quarry blasting. It is famous for its eccentric stalactites, which grow in every direction as if defying gravity. Guided visits only.

Ojo Guareña (Burgos)

One of the largest cave systems in the Iberian Peninsula, with more than 100 km of passages. The highlight is the hermitage of San Bernabé, a chapel built into a cave mouth, with painted walls. Reach it from Soba over the Portillo de la Sía pass, about an hour’s drive.
